help woolly benefit
An evening of music, dance, theater, tiny stages, regular size stages, no stages. Some of our favorite bands/collaborators will be in the back room--Tara Jane O'Neil, Cex Fucx, Evolutionary Jass Band, Starfucker, Bryce Panic (Mirah's awesomely dancing/rapping drummer)--interspersed with a special presentation of Ten Tiny Dances (4 Tiny Dances) in the front room. On the Tiny stage will be Fever Theater, Rush-N-Disco, local heroes Linda Austin and Karen Nelson presenting The Tuning Score (whose originator, Lisa Nelson, will be in residency in Portland at the time of this event!), and Woolly Mammoth (that's us). In a silent auction you can place bids on gift certificates galore from places such as: PICA, Tiga, Podnah's, Lovely Hula Hands, Hi iH Gallery, the Fresh Pot, and items such as delicious wine, massages, a Gyrotonic session, and yoga classes, just to start. All this partying and fundraising is to help us, Woolly Mammoth Comes to Dinner, as we have been invited to teach and perform at an International Performance Art Festival in Puebla, Mexico, called Performatica (http://performatica.org/), where every student attends any class for free, and where multitudes of artists from all over the world get lots of students and facilities, and no money. After an incredible gestation of performing around Portland for our friends and heroes (including a surprise birthday party for our favorite 7 year old), Woolly is going abroad. Why drive up to Seattle for our first show outside of Portland when we can fly to Mexico City? Good question! So off we go, on American Airlines, March 25. Please help us get there (and please help us get back) by showing up at Holocene on March 2.

about woolly
Woolly Mammoth Comes to Dinner is a kinesthetic experiment in nonsense performed by Portland-based dancers Katie Arrants, Kathleen Keogh, and Rikki Rothenberg. The collective grounds its work in: conceptual absurdity, physical intensity, emotional authenticity, and fun. Praised in recent reviews for its “quirky athleticism” and “fresh and smart” brand of humor and mania, Woolly creates idiosyncratic, audience-friendly work that invites community participation and includes frequent collaborations with local designers, photographers, visual artists, and musicians.

bryce panic
Bryce Panic is a groove machine. You may have seen him during the past year in your town singing, playing drums and beatboxing with Mirah or The Blow, or opening up for Old Time Relijun with his multi-coastal hip hop crew Better Bizness Bureau. The group’s debut album, "Bryce Panic Presenta--Better Bizness Bureau," was recorded almost entirely in Argentina and combines complex lyrics and a wide array of unconventional backing tracks. It was released in January, and Panic will continue touring solo to support it. As for his live set…well, Bryce Panic believes in the power of the dance party.

tjo
Tara Jane O'Neilis a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, painter, arranger and engineer of explosively growing gifts. Past projects include The Sonora Pine, Retsin, and Rodan. With an ability to paint with sound—through her voice, mixing board, or any of the instruments at her disposal—TJO is a peek into where music is going as artists take the reigns and record outside the limitations of strict studio time or dependence on what everyone else is doing. O’Neil’s collaborations with a diverse community of friends and advisers include: scoring theater productions and short films, playing improvised shows, and working with dancers and painters. Lately, she can be seen tossing shakers, bells, and tambourines out into the audience, accompanied by ladder-climbing, Portland fixture Fred Nemo.

rush-n-disco
Rush-N-Disco ("The original YouTube cover band”) employs everything from 1920s Charleston music to celebutante breakdowns and cutting edge hip hop routines to get their point across. Like a post modern Mike Nichols and Elaine May, Greg Arden and Alicia McDaid commit fully to their cut-n-paste invocations of failed pop stars and amateur pet videos. The result is a pastiche of juxtapositions that tell an abstract yet hilarious tale of our generation's fascination with the obscure.

fever theater
Fever Theater is a colossus in peasant’s clothing, a throbbing juggernaut of catharsis sneakily sheathed in subjective dungarees and a loose-knit sweater of thought-provocation. We are a theater of metamorphosis, kidnapping our audiences, spoiling them with gifts of every medium whilst changing their world into a place of unexpected delights. We stretch our skin as tight as canvas to envelop audiences in our chrysalis. We transform traditional theater into a contemporary ritual that haunts dreams and “moves beyond pure spectacle into the realm of genuine experience.” Our environments are collaboratively built by an ensemble of theater artists and designers who take nothing for granted, who build everything from scratch, and who love nothing more than rearranging your mind.

cexfucx
Cexfucx is Jean-Paul, Gabriel, Heather, Shane, Maggie, Mark, Asa, Luke and Dana creating music that some describe as free jazz-funk. The band is known for transforming a sheep barn into a hot and sweaty Sun Ra discotheque, and a downtown alleyway into a pulsing throng with their stamina-defying sets of dance-able mayhem. Or, in their own words: "You screaming in my ear while being humped by a Tyranasaurus Rex on board the good ship Lollipop manned by Mate Slim who is blasting us off into space using only sub bass as propulsion through 500 inch woofers and breaking through Jupiter's hymen spraying enough cosmic slop to put out the sun which in turn freezes everything on earth…"

linda austin & tuning friends
The Tuning Group consists of local heart throbs Karen Nelson, Linda Austin, and Bryce Kasson, plus seven additional dancers from around the country. These dance veterans are gathering in Portland from February 25 - March 5 to work intensively on the Tuning Score with its originator, Lisa Nelson. The Tuning Score is an ongoing performance research format that is both site-specific and multidisciplinary. Each player, a specialist in his own experience and discipline, uses spontaneous actions and simple verbal calls to continually tune the image, time, and space, in order to make meaning for themselves.

starfucker
Starfucker has two drumsets, a turntable and some old radios for feedback noise. Starfucker is Josh Hodges (of Sexton Blake), Ryan Biornstad (of Sexton Blake, Old Crips, Junkface) and Shawn Glassford (of Mr. Frederick, Marmits) making dancey cinematic pop fun for the whole family. They have played PDX Pop Fest, Music Fest Northwest, and the Children of the Revolution. Last year they self-released a seven song CDR and appeared on two compilation albums. Upcoming music includes a full-length release on Badman Records and a split seven inch on Boy Gorilla records with Eskimo and Sons, Dirty Mittens, and Typhoon.

evolutionary jass band
Evolutionary Jass Band is Jef Brown on tenor, baritone and soprano sax, Michael Henrickson on drums, Marisa Anderson on guitar, Bob Jones on bass, Daphna Kohn on violin and vocals, Christine Denkewalter on tenor sax, and Jesse Johnson on trumpet. Though the band has focused on jazz music since its inception in 2001, the music can jump all over the timeline and map of what that word signifies. Without fail, the musicianship of each member and their obvious chemistry effortlessly takes the audience from stomping and hollering, to swaying with eyes closed, and back again. Releases include Change of Scene on community library and What's Lost on Mississippi Records, and will soon include This is What is Happening Today (community library) and Pop Record (Jaffe Records). Members of the band also play in local bands: Gulls, Better Homes and Gardens, Tapestry, New Bad Things, as well as forging ahead with brilliant solo endeavors (Jef is known to pick up the guitar once in a while, and Marisa will knock anyone's socks off with her gorgeous guitar, singing, and songwriting). As community library put it: "…the band is quickly forging a powerful, brave, and singular musical
voice."
